The Right Wheatgrass Juicer

Omega 8006 Masticating JuicerThere’s a right wheatgrass juicer and a wrong one because juicing wheatgrass is somewhat different than juicing other vegetables. Due to the high fiber content, this plant needs to be juiced using masticating juicers.

There’s a big difference between masticating and centrifugal juicers. If you use your standard centrifugal household juicer to make juice out of wheatgrass two things will probably happen:

  • Due to wheatgrass’ high fiber content the juicer will probably get jammed, making you disassemble the juicer and remove the clogged up material, thus complicating your work.
  • Due to the high centrifugal forces innate to these juicers, the valuable enzymes are destroyed in the process of oxidation.

Omega VRT330 Vertical JuicerYou see, most electric juicers out there have their RPM in the range of 6000-12000. This is way to fast for processing wheatgrass. Furthermore, they are very noisy and emit heat which further damages the wheatgrass.

The only kind of juicer that is able to extract the juice from the wheatgrass and keep all the beneficial nutrients is a masticating juicer.

A masticating wheatgrass juicer utilizes single or twin augers which spin at speeds of around 100RPM. They emit little or no heat and are far more durable and quiet than their regular counterparts. Furthermore, they almost always have additional functions like pasta, baby food and various other attachments. They are easy to clean and maintain.

The process of mastication consists of crushing the blades of wheatgrass and pushing the pulp to a little spot where it is pressed and the juice is finally extracted. This results in higher yields and more nutrient rich juice.

Hurricane Manual Wheatgrass Juicer

There is also a manual wheatgrass juicer. It is the best option if you’re on a budget. There are a number of different types but the most common one is a single auger wheatgrass juicer. Manual wheatgrass juicers are easy to operate. After use they are easily disassembled cleaned by simply rinsing the parts in water.

They are lightweight and usually made of sturdy materials such as stainless steel or lexan. They are good on the go and will fit almost anywhere.

There are other factors you should consider before you make a final decision such as available space on your countertop, the amount of juice you plan on producing daily and whether you plan on using your wheatgrass juicer for other vegetables as well. One thing is certain, though: whatever you decide there is a wide variety of quality different juicers out there to fit everyone’s budget and preference.
